How to Clean Natural Stone Floors at Home (Without Damaging Them)

Natural stone floors — marble, travertine, limestone, and slate — are some of the most beautiful surfaces in any Las Vegas home. But they’re also among the most misunderstood when it comes to cleaning. Use the wrong product once, and you can dull a finish that took years to build.

Here’s what we tell every homeowner who asks us how to keep their stone looking its best between professional visits.

The #1 Rule: Never Use Acidic Cleaners

This is the mistake we see most often. Vinegar, lemon juice, bleach, and most all-purpose household cleaners are acidic or alkaline enough to etch natural stone — especially marble and travertine. Etching appears as dull, hazy spots that no amount of mopping will fix. Once the surface is etched, it typically requires professional re-polishing to restore.

Safe cleaners for natural stone: pH-neutral stone soaps or plain warm water. Look for products labeled specifically for natural stone.

Sweep or Dust Mop Daily

Fine grit and sand act like sandpaper underfoot. In Las Vegas, dust and desert sand find their way indoors constantly — and every step grinds that debris into the surface of your floors. A quick dry sweep or microfiber dust mop daily makes a significant difference in how long your polish lasts.

Wet Mop with Minimal Water

Stone is porous. Standing water — especially near grout lines — can work its way in and cause staining or weaken the grout over time. When wet mopping, use a barely damp mop and dry the floor immediately after. Never let water pool.

Blot Spills Immediately

Red wine, coffee, citrus juice — anything acidic or dark-pigmented should be blotted (not wiped, which spreads it) as soon as it hits the floor. The longer it sits, the deeper it penetrates. Keep a clean cloth nearby in kitchens and dining areas.

When to Call a Professional

Even with great daily habits, natural stone benefits from professional deep cleaning and resealing every 1–2 years depending on traffic. If you’re seeing dullness, scratching, staining that won’t lift, or grout that looks dingy no matter what you do — those are signs it’s time for a professional restoration.
